About Learning to DJ

How it Started

Here’s a quick story about how this all began.

test Large

My name is Robert and some of the most profound revelations I’ve had, happened on the dance floor.

Returning from a transformative trip to Costa Rica, reading Brewster & Broughton’s Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, helped me see a deeper reason my contemplated personality felt drawn to dance music. So, I started Learning to DJ to share my 12+ years of passion, perspective and enthusiasm for the role of the DJ the modern world.

Today the DJ is a post modern icon of sorts – the artist of artists – leading a party into a sense of wonder, joy and awe with a talent for selection; but there is a deeper meaning to the DJ’s work: stoking the capacity for transformation contained in dance. In the quest for the alchemical integration of physical (body), metaphysical (mind) and spiritual (music) – it’s the disc jock who remains the authority to its method, shaman to its preparation, and revealer to its insight.

I invite you to explore that deeper meaning with me at learningtodj.com

My Approach to Teaching

My teaching style isn’t for everyone. It’s important to find a teach who resonates with your values and teaching style

DJ Theory & Philosophy

I focus a lot on theory, about half of the time I spend in front of white boards as I do behind the decks, because I think there’s a lot at play that deserves to be explained when it comes to DJing.

Structured Learning

I firmly believe that even if it’s imperfect, a guided syllabus and structured path built module on module yields the best returns compared to ad-hoc learning from resources around the web

Music & Humanity

Music is a deeply personal experience for everyone, for me it is no different.
